Zusammenfassung: | The origin & development of the group vitality concept in ethnolinguistics are explicated, along with methods developed to measure the concept. A preliminary version of a transactive model is presented, which is intended for use as a conceptual framework in understanding existing research, & a directive for future research. The model is based on the notion that a more holistic approach to subjective ethnolinguistic vitality is needed, & that the multiple determinants of vitality assessment should be examined. The model takes into account three major sets of elements: elements of situation, elements of vitality cognition /assessment, & outcome of vitality assessments. A series of research propositions based on the model is outlined & discussed. 5 Figures, 104 References. B. Annesser Murray |
