ELEVATED LEVELS OF PRO-INFLAMMATORY CYTOKINE-TUMOR NECROSIS FACTOR (TNF-ALPHA) IN THE SKELETAL MUSCLE OF PATIENTS WITH STROKE

An abstract of a study by Macko et al investigating whether TNF-alpha mRNA expression is elevated in hemiparetic leg (P) muscle of stroke patients, compared to the non-paretic leg (NP) and age-matched controls is presented. Findings suggest that elevated TNF-alpha in both P and NP leg muscles may co...

Zusammenfassung:An abstract of a study by Macko et al investigating whether TNF-alpha mRNA expression is elevated in hemiparetic leg (P) muscle of stroke patients, compared to the non-paretic leg (NP) and age-matched controls is presented. Findings suggest that elevated TNF-alpha in both P and NP leg muscles may contribute to muscular trophy and increased prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in chronic stroke.
