Zusammenfassung: | One of the most noticed electoral shifts in recent American politics has been the success of the Republican presidential nominees in the South. Along with these wins came heightened expectations for success at other electoral levels. Increased Republican success has not occurred among the southern region's congressional delegation. This paper proposes and tests a model to explain Republican stagnation in the region's congressional elections by exploring the effects of incumbency, coattails, and intraparty competition in the regional context of the South. |
