Zusammenfassung: | Attempts to quantify religious affiliation in the People's Republic of China are problematic due to the official atheist ideology. Further, the major religions are closely related & complementary, making distinction among them difficult. Official estimates suggest that 91 million Chinese in 55 ethnic minorities identify as Shamans, Animists, Lamas, & Ninayana Buddhists. The majority of Chinese belonging to the Han ethnic group are composed of Taoists, Confucianists, & Buddhists. Also shaping the religious complex of China are 7 million Christians & several hundred Jews. Official census figures number the faithful much lower than do outside estimates. 1 Figure.
