Zusammenfassung: | Commenting on an experiment on scientific reasoning reported by Hilary Farris & Russell Revlin (see SA 38:2/90V4465), who claim to have demonstrated that successful disconfirmatory subjects actually follow a counterfactual strategy, some methodological problems are pointed out, & a follow-up study is proposed. Also attempted is to put the Farris-Revlin study into a larger philosophical & sociological context. In Rule Discovery Strategies: Falsification without Disconfirmation (Reply to Gorman), Farris (RAND Corp, Santa Monica, Calif) & Revlin point out flaws in Gorman's critique, restate the goals of their study, & reaffirm their theses.
