Zusammenfassung: | Empirical analysis indicates that popular wisdom and humorous discourse notwithstanding, the size of American state bureaucracies is not positively associated in a meaningful way with large dependent populations, Democratic Party strength, or public policies stressing innovation, education, welfare, or redistribution generally. Moreover, their size is only moderately affected by federal intervention. Spatial factors, on the other hand, may be a far more substantial contributor to the size of state bureaucracies. |
