The way these refugees reacted to the experience of being strangers in their land of refuge is analyzed. A collective portrait is painted of refugee intellectuals in the social sciences & humanities, examining the conditions that allowed their maximum effectiveness as well as those that impeded their integration in the US scholarly world. 6 References.
