Zusammenfassung: | Since the 1979 revolution in Nicaragua, a struggle has emerged between two political models. Documents published by the Council of Private Entrepreneurs & by the Conservative Party are analyzed, showing their support for a conception of the state based on the development of the private economy. This is in opposition to the political orientation of the Sandinist regime, which aims to bring the private sector into submission to the public one. The local bourgeoisie favors the former model & is using religion as an ideological weapon. Documents published by the bishops reveal how their social position & religious orientations reinforce those of the bourgeoisie. But there is a reaction to this orientation among certain other Catholic & Ecumenical organizations & groups of priests. Some theoretical reflections are offered concerning the functions of religion in a revolutionary phase. 2 Tables. Modified HA. |
