Zusammenfassung: | Drawing on earlier research of churches & other voluntary organizations, a theoretical basis & research agenda for understanding the role of value-based leadership in effecting societal change are established. The coordination of efforts toward common purposes requires an authority that represents the self-interested pursuits of individuals or social groups & the larger goals of society. Effective leaders can raise members' consciousness to more universalistic values. Church leaders may have a unique role in influencing societal change because: (1) the sacred can legitimate authority; (2) the church community can increase individual security; & (3) church participation can foster cross-cutting social attachments. Suggestions are given for additional research stressing the impact of leadership on followers' personalities & values, & the coordination of local & national leadership. 12 References. Modified AA. |
