Zusammenfassung:The influence of maternal sex-role attitudes on the sex-role attitudes of young freshman female college students was explored among 74 pairs of mothers and daughters who completed an attitudinal inventory. Regression analysis revealed mothers' attitudes to be more important predictors of daughters' attitudes than maternal characteristics such as age, marital status, education, and occupational status. Also, mothers with college educations were found to display a greater degree of attitudinal similarity with their daughters than did non-college educated mothers, regardless of whether their attitudes were liberal or traditional. The study suggests that maternal attitudes influence the development of sex-role attitudes among daughters, but the effectiveness with which the mother transmits her attitudes may be affected by sociodemographic variables, particularly education.
