Zusammenfassung: | An analysis of empirical evidence from various studies & statistical sources concerning the proportion & content of TV & radio broadcasting in Switzerland that emanates from other countries indicates that the Swiss media are experiencing an overwhelming & -- in its dimensions -- unique penetration from outside. Indigenous political & economic forces are furthering the ongoing processes of transnationalization, commercialization, & privatization. The consequences of these developments are discussed. It is concluded that the erosion of the public broadcasting system as the primary cultural institution -- which is happening throughout Western Europe -- will have especially negative effects in Switzerland, reducing the quality of communication services, & provoking processes of social disintegration. 6 Tables, 22 References.
