Zusammenfassung: | The attainment of consensus is a crucial feature in evaluations of medical technologies by the National Instits of Health (NIH). Through Apr 1985, 50 consensus conferences have been held to examine a variety of topics. The relations between this system & the peer review system formerly used by NIH are emphasized. Several aspects of the consensus process have been viewed critically by the medical profession, but the process appears to offer a number of advantages & not to merit these fears. 1 Table, 1 Figure.
