Zusammenfassung:A conceptual definition of self-disclosure is proposed, in order to discriminate this type of self-referent speech behavior from such behaviors as self-presentation & lying about oneself. The attributes of truth, sincerity, intentionality, novelty, & "privacy" are proposed as a basis for discriminating different types of self-referent speech, including self-disclosure. Discriminating between types of self-referent behavior is necessary because their conditions of occurrence & the social & psychological variables & effects associated with each type differ. Research design & theorizing need to take these differences into account. 1 Table, 58 References. AA.
