Zusammenfassung:The origins & various definitions of the term "environment" are explored in a review of social science literature, focusing on human ecology. The situation is described as "semantic chaos." The concepts of "inside" & "outside" are discussed. Modifiers applied to the term "environment" are examined: natural/artificial; functional/operational/effective; perceptual/conceptual; & total. Alternative terms, such as habitat & milieu, are investigated. Some suggestions are made for improving cross-disciplinary communication. 125 References. C. Waters
