Zusammenfassung: | The crucial features of Guttman scaling are unidimensionality & cumulativeness. The application of this technique to legislative & judicial behavior raises questions about whether the technique can in fact differentiate unidimensional from dimensionless or multidimensional data sets. Both sorts of confusion can be avoided, but only through careful attention to details of the situations analyzed. Further, it is necessary to determine what dimension is being identified. This may require subjective assessments of meaning. Behavioral studies of judicial decision-making or other collegial processes may encounter problems in relying on this technique. 5 Tables.
