Hierarchical Structures & the Principle of Least Difficulty

It is shown how hierarchical structures for a group of Ss can be obtained by using the variational principle of least difficulty. Examples are used to explore & illustrate some of the principle's consequences. Analogies with various theories in the physical sciences are stressed. 9 Figures....
