Zusammenfassung: | The resource efficiency and maintenance of food, fuel, and fiber production in developing nations can be improved by forest biotechnology. Applications include: 1. preservation of the genetic base of important tree crops, 2. production of tree seedlings, 3. manipulation of soil microbiology, 4. introduction of the symbiotic mycorrhizae fungi that help tree growth, 5. protection of tree plantations, and 6. fiber processing. Biotechnology networking among research institutions and private industry can augment existing research personnel and facilities efficiently and can increase the level, productivity, and effectiveness of biotechnology applications substantially over the next 10 years. Investment by government, universities, and private industry will be needed to develop and implement forest biotechnology techniques in developing nations. Substantial capital must be invested in laboratories, trained scientists, and prototype production facilities. |
