In 1997, Burmese plaintiffs sought to hold a U.S.-based multinational corporation liable in a U.S. district court for human rights abuses committed by the Burmese government against Burmese citizens in furtherance of a joint venture project in Burma between the Burmese government, the U.S. multinational corporation and others.
