Zusammenfassung: | Compares Ecuadorian President Lucio Gutierrez to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez & Brazilian President Lula da Silva, highlighting their connections to their countries' indigenous poor & their stances against neoliberalism & globalization. Gutierrez & his Venezuelan & Brazilian counterparts differ from the rest of Latin American political leadership with their leftist appeals to the poor majority & their resistance to the North. Their respective candidacies were marked by electoral division & subsequent runoff elections. Gutierrez & Chavez have both experienced ousters, swift returns to power, general strikes, & precarious holds on their office. Nonetheless, their demands for educating & assisting the poor majority & their attempts at equalizing income distribution offer Latin America new political options. D. Bajo |
