Zusammenfassung: | The US's, the European Union's (EU), & the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's respective struggles against international terrorist activity following the September 11 (2001) terrorist attacks are studied. A historical overview of international terrorist activity is presented, emphasizing the import of transportation & communication advancements to such acts. Additional overviews of the respective responses to the September 11 attacks by the US & NATO are provided. After explaining NATO's lack of involvement in the US initiatives in Afghanistan in late 2001, several recommendations that could augment NATO's role in the international fight against terrorism are offered. In addition, the EU's enactment of measures concerning police & judicial cooperation, diplomatic response to global terrorism, attitudes toward the Middle East, & adoption of programs designed to limit illicit financial activities by terrorist groups are discussed.
