Zusammenfassung:Offers an account of the satellite enterprise of the Pacific Island nation and examines it from the standpoint of international political economy. Suggests that the current phase of globalisation has led Pacific nations to ventures where their sovereignty is used as a resource to advance private interests against regulatory attempts by metropolitan states. Characterises the Tongan venture as having deep structural similarities to flags of conveniences and other offshore services provided by a number of Pacific Island nations. Considers the emergence of Tongasat in relation to the global satellite regime, particularly the decline of American hegemony in outer space and the end of the cold war. Discusses its economic impact on the Kingdom.
