Zusammenfassung: | Cultural heritage & econ environment are seen as primary factors accounting for diff's in the soc structure of 2 emigrant groups currently situated in Greater Bombay. Official Census figures for 1960-1961 provide data. Charts & tables present: sections with highest & lowest % of Maharashtrian & Gujarati migrants, age distribution by sex of both groups (1961), rates of out-migration & return-migration for both groups during 1960-1961, distribution of religion, distribution of migrant workers among both groups by educ'al category, distribution of working migrants by industr division & sex, distribution of M migrants by industr divisions & duration of residence in Bombay City, distribution by occup'al division & sex, % M migrant workers who are employed as laborers by age & duration of residence. A discussion emphasizes that in addition to the 2 factors first mentioned, the interrelation of group characteristics must be noted. Results are analyzed in this light & implications for future migration from these areas assessed. L. Tumin. |
