Introduction: CyberPolitics in International Relations

The implications of cyberspace for international relations are investigated. It is contended that advances in Internet technology can be used to increase political communication, participation, & decision making. The three articles published in this issue address different political uses of cyberspace, eg, the use of information technologies in developing sustainability strategies. Factors that have the potential to obstruct the use of cyberspace for political purposes are examined. An analysis of cyberspace's changing configurations, influence on traditional notions of territoriality & property rights, ability to connect international communities, & implications for reducing political inequality on an international level is presented. Three tendencies that have currently surfaced within the emergent discourse of "cyberPolitics" are discussed: the creation of virtual states; the development of large urban centers; & the spread of global citizenship. In addition, collaborations designed to promote global knowledge networking are explored; specific attention is directed toward the Global System for Sustainable Development. 6 Figures, 11 References.
