Zusammenfassung: | At the time of Austro-Hungarian occupation, Gradacac had been the center of a spacious and densely populated district which population, for the most part, lived off of agriculture. Free peasant tenement prevailed in the Gradacac County (district). In terms of the number of its inhabitants, the city as such was ranked 22nd in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The industrial development and the railway network that Austro-Hungary constructed in Bosnia and Herzegovina bypassed Gradacac and its surroundings. Thus, during the Austro-Hungarian period, the city became the center of local craftsmanship, small entrepreneurship, and agriculture. Certain changes were mainly reflected in intensified traffic and increased trade. Generally, it may be said that, in terms of urban development, Gradacac advanced very gradually.
