Zusammenfassung:"Spontaneous schools" have sprung up in various sub-Saharan African countries (in particular Chad, Mali, & Cameroon) over the past 20 years. Placed in the historical & political context of building schools from the colonial era to systems of national education, these schools are analyzed in relation to the contexts where they have sprung up, the sorts of demand spawning them, the knowledge transmitted, the "school panorama" into which they fit, & their legal status. The notion of a counter-education is used to interpret these schools as a necessary phase in appropriating the means to control the impact of school on social reproduction in these societies. 3 Tables, 21 References.
