The Formation of the Ethos of Scientific Community in the Novosibirsk University Town in the 1960s

Three groups of factors affecting the formation of the ethos of a local scientific community are differentiated: (1) general norms & values regulating the behavior & actions of all scientists (macrolevel ethics); (2) the value system & interrelationship standards practiced in a specific country or culture (mesolevel ethics); & (3) specific sociopolitical conditions in which a given scientific community is formed & required to act & perform its functions (microlevel ethics). The latter set of factors are emphasized, sketching the history of the formation of the Novosibirsk scientific center, including the creation of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, in the late 1950s, & discussing the major events in its functioning during the Soviet era. 29 References.
