Zusammenfassung:	Zeitlin and Joyce review an earlier hypothesis concerning why only five "key areas" of Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica had evolved into enduring economic and demographic power centers and examine it specifically as it relates to interaction between the Valley of Oaxaca and two of its lowland sources of supply along the Pacific coast: the Lower Rio Verde Valley and the Southern Isthumus of Tehuantepec.
