Gould examines the counter-revolutionary turn that British politics so clearly took during the American Revolution. Ultimately, this turn had at least as much to do with a growing willingness to reaffirm the close relations between the Whig establishment and the other "civilized states" of Europe as it did with the British peoples' long-standing traditions of patriotic and religious exceptionalism.
