Zusammenfassung: | Examines the role of civil society in reshaping gender relations & promoting women's rights at the national & international levels, focusing on Brazil, along with the other southern cone countries of Latin America (Argentina, Chile, & Uruguay). The rise of the women's movement in Brazil is analyzed in the context of three stages of change in the Latin American political situation since the mid-1970s. The development of several women's organizations & their political activism is chronicled, linking movements addressing feminist & human rights concerns at the local & global levels. Challenges that continue to confront Brazilian & other Latin American feminists are outlined, particularly those involving the introduction of gender concerns into larger debates about economic globalization & international trade. 10 References.
