Zusammenfassung: | Kinship terms for the Chulupi Indians of the Paraguayan Chaco, collected from native informants, are listed with their denotata. Following the methodology of W. H. Goodenough for componential analysis, the discriminant variables of the terms are determined as: consanguinity vs affinity, generation, polarity, relative generation of affinal link, affinal link through sibling or other, degree of lineal or collateral removal, parenthood of alter, condition of mourning, relative sex, relative residence, & sex of alter. Mourning terms seem never before to have been found for a South Amer group. They are known for Australia, New Guinea, & elsewhere in the southwest Pacific, as well as for the Shasta of Calif. The Chulupi apply mourning terms to kinsmen who have lost a child. The usage seems congruent with teknonymy. The findings support R. Needhan's r of mourning terms with a segmentary society of small isolated groups of people in direct soc dependence without a complex DofL. AA. |
