Zusammenfassung: | This article takes a look at the political & presidential administration of Alvaro Uribe Velez, a right-wing leader with alleged ties to the drugs trade & a penchant for reliance on paramilitary forces. (These forces, ostensibly established to promote rural security & fight against guerrillas, were known to have committed human rights violations until they were finally outlawed in 1999.) During his time in office, his supposed popular support have come at the cost of the violent elimination of opposition, & poverty & economic inequality remain a reality in Colombia. Yet, despite this unsavory legacy & questionable character, Uribe, whose rightist leanings stand in sharp contrast to the left leanings of other Latin American leaders, is reportedly a close personal friend of George W. Bush. Adapted from the source document. |
