Social indicators for development planning and analysis

Having distinguished between the main types of indicators - which he defines as applications of economic and social statistics to the analysis of economic and social trends, and to the planning and evaluation of policy - the author examines the main features and "sequence" of statistics and indicators used in development planning. The main body of the article is devoted to a more detailed consideration of the practical application of social indicators to planning and of their advantages and limitations: the example of employment indicators serves to illustrate the importance of adapting the choice and interpretation of indicators to the stage of development in question
