The political economy of anti-dumping undertakings in the European communities

Logit regression analysis is used to test the validity of hypothesized determinants of the European Communities' choice between the acceptance of undertakings and the imposition of definitive duties in terminating antidumping cases. The results of the study confirm that certain variables based on the theory of the political economy of trade policy, supplemented by those suggested by knowledgeable practitioners, go a long way in explaining such choice. The findings and the approach used have important practical implications, particularly for the defendants and the lawyers involved in antidumping cases.
