French Linguistics in Romania

In Romania, French linguistics has experienced a remarkable upsurge in the last 15 years. Based on both theoretical & applied research aimed at didactic ends, Romanian studies of French linguistics cannot be dissociated from university teaching. Such studies are characterized by their search for a theoretical model to explain & describe the function of the language at different levels & for a linguistic & language mechanism specific to teaching French as a foreign language. The involvement of specific Romanian universities in virtually all linguistic domains is mentioned. Books & PhD dissertations published in Hungary on the history of French & on French phonology, lexicology, onomastics, semantics, pragmatics, stylistics, poetics, & rhetoric are listed & described, along with works on French language teaching & French-Romanian translation. This output is seen as part of an ongoing effort to combine language theory & practice, to renovate & modernize French language teaching, & to preserve & strengthen French speaking in Romania. L. H.
