CONGRATULATIONS TO GERHARD NICKEL ON THE OCCASION OF HIS 70th BIRTHDAY

The research activities as well as the teaching of the Kiel period reflect Gerhard Nickel's commitment to the whole profile of English Philology (i.e. English Linguistics and Literature as well as Medieval English Language and Literature), although he was most heavily devoted to areas of historical linguistics and modern linguistic models. Since 1967, Gerhard Nickel has been editor-in-chief of the International Review of Applied Linguistics (IRAL). [...]his missions for UNESCO and the Council of Europe have substantially influenced language planning projects in Europe and throughout the world. Since 1986 Gerhard Nickel has been engaged in the development of the English Department at Opole University which was founded in 1994 in his native region Upper Silesia.
