Zusammenfassung: | A study of English & French loanwords in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) focuses on changes that cause them to conform with BP phonology, derivation rules, & syntactic functions; semantic restrictions & changes of meaning are also exemplified. Patterns of consonant loss are contrasted with those of vocalic amplification; English /d/, /t/, /s/, & /r/ typically follow the allophonic patterns of the corresponding BP phonemes. Instances of possible orthographic influence are suggested. Loanwords tend to be restricted noun functions in BP, productive derivations supplying other syntactic functions. The meaning of a loanword tends to be limited to one sense, that of the context in which borrowing occurred. 4 References. Adapted from the source document |
