Zusammenfassung: | The precise definition of phonetic simultaneity in IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) phonetics is discussed, toward facilitating greater phonetic precision in narrow transcription. The type of simultaneity addressed are coarticulatory, physical-acoustic, pseudo-simultaneity, phenomenal coalescence, sequential, symbolic, reflexive, tautology/equivalence, & prosodic. An expanded IPA vowel chart is presented as a standard reference source, & examples of each type of simultaneity as used in the literature for transcribing 50 languages are listed. 58 References. S.
