Zusammenfassung:The importance of context as one of the most precise factors in determining use of synonymous verbs is stressed. It is considered necessary that limits be placed on the identification of synonyms, primarily in bilingual dictionaries; a stated goal is to have grammatically & semantically parallel sentences that are illustrative & yet not redundant. The role of the complement as a means of exposing the synonym-context of a given verb is also clarified. It is claimed that the distinctive syntactic features of polysemous substantives can be used to analyze synonymous ones. Examples are given, & it is concluded that the addition of such a signal-word is necessary, which by virtue of its syntactic distinctiveness, may identify a given meaning for a polysemous noun. 20 References.
