GRAMMATICALIZATION OF LEXICAL MARKERS IN KUWAITI ARABIC

An investigation of the development of future & progressive markers in Kuwaiti Arabic (KA) from lexical expressions into grammatical markers. As these constructions become grammaticalized, they are reduced to affixes on the verb. It is predicted that a phonological reduction of the progressive marker will occur similarly to the phonological reduction of the future marker that has already taken place in KA.
