The Problems of a Pronunciation Dictionary: Remarks on the New Longman Pronunciation Dictionary

Shortcomings are noted in the newest edition of the Longman Pronunciation Dictionary by J. C. Wells (Harlow: Longman, 1990): in a phonetic division of the syllable, the i/u neutralization, the r-liaison, notation of phonemes & allo-phonemes, the distinction between the vowels (schwa) & (turned v), the symbols for schwa & syllabic consonants, the treatment of crescendo diphthongs, smoothing, & pre-fortis clipping, word accent, & variants frequency. Comparisons are made with other pronunciation dictionaries currently available in the UK & US, especially the English Pronouncing Dictionary (Ramsaran, S. [Ed], London, 1988). 26 References. Z. Dubiel
