Linguistic Concepts of A. G. Shanidze

Occasioned by the one hundredth anniversary of his birth, Akakiya Gavrilovich Shanidze's contributions to general & Georgian linguistics are presented & his scientific career is outlined. Shanidze's major linguistic achievements were in the study of Old & Modern Georgian, the history of the Georgian lang, the analysis & publication of Old Georgian documents, a description of the structure of Megrelian & Svansk dialects, the history of these two langs, the compilation & publication of Megrelian & Svansk texts, lexical studies of Kartvelian langs, the problems of Georgian dialectology, an analysis of folklore texts & their annotated editions, the history of Georgia & its reflection in the development of the Georgian langs, Georgian paleography & epigraphy, Armenian studies, Caucasian-Albanian writings, & the problems of North Caucasian linguistics. Shanidze's pioneering work in many of these areas is acknowledged & he is recognized as the founder of Kartvelian linguistics. 21 References. Z. Dubiel
