Reflections on a New German Grammar for Foreigners

Described is a grammar (in preparation) by B. Sundqvist & F. Freund for Swedish U students. Outlined are its goals, description of problems (from a view of language as an open, dynamic system in which each grammatical category has a center & a periphery), explicitness, precise definitions of terms, layout of material, the attention to understanding the rules, description of modern Standard German's written & spoken forms, the treatment of syntactic & stylistic variations & regional peculiarities, explanations of the historical development, literary references, types of examples used, & revision based on results of classroom testing. 26 References.
