Accuracy vs. Economy in Semantic Specifications: A Review Article

Yu. Apresyan's Tipy informatsii dlya poverkhnostno-semanticheskogo komponenta modeli Smysl ** Tekst ([Information Types for the Surface-Semantic Component of the Meaning-Text Models], Vienna: Instit fur Slavistik der Universitat Wien, 1980) is reviewed. Apresyan's role in the development of the meaning-text theory (MTT) is discussed & the model is outlined. The book proposes a two-level (universal & lang-specific) semantics for MTT, which interprets deep syntactic structure, filtering out those combinations that, although well-formed at the deep universal level, are not well-formed at the lang-specific level. The book's three chapters are outlined. Z. Dubiel
