Zusammenfassung:As contemporary intentional semantics developed from G. Frege's Sinn/Bedeutung (sense/meaning) distinction, it is necessary to determine whether this distinction is valid. Discussed is the history of Bedeutung in Frege, & problems in its translation, along with Frege's replacement of subject/predicate by argument /function & problems in the Begriffsschrift account. Later clarifications of the theory via analogy between propositions & calculating expressions are given. A schema to represent functions was introduced; there appeared to be an ambiguity in the notion of "completing" a schema. The confusion of value with meaning prompted the Sinn/Bedeutung distinction. The extension of value to include truth & falsity explains the translation of Bedeutung as 'reference'. The analogy between calculating expressions & propositions has been overplayed. Modified HA
