Text Linguistics in the Didactics of Translation. The Case of the Verbal and Nominal Clause Types in Arabic

Possible applications of text linguistics in the field of translation teaching are explored. The specific area focused on is the analysis of discourse texture within functional sentence perspective & theme-rheme theory. The choice between the verbal & nominal clause types in Arabic will provide a testing ground for hypotheses formed about the nature of text in context (eg, Hartmann, R. R. K., Contrastive Textology, Heidelberg: Julius Groos Verlag, 1980). It is argued that texture (as manifested in the use of the verbal & nominal clause types in Arabic) is determined by text structure (text compositional plan), which is in turn determined by text context.
