Location and Direction in Toba: Verbal Morphology

Features of space are expressed in terms of location, direction, & motion in the V morphology of Toba, a Guaykuruan language spoken primarily in the Argentine Chaco. General morphological information about Toba Vs, & an analysis of the semantics of pronominal prefixes, verbal suffixes, & the V base are offered. Motion vs nonmotion & direction as semantic features of V affixes are discussed, as well as V bases marked for direction of motion, visual perception, or location in space. Implications of these fine discriminations of locative space are noted as a genetic feature of areal significance. 2 Tables. AA
