Linguistic Analysis: A Diachronic Perspective

Contrastive, error, performance, & discourse analyses are briefly described, discussed, & compared. Contrasts between these methods are presented along with modifications & outgrowths of the theoretical bases of each as originally proposed. An appeal for reconciliation & possible consolidation of divergent theories is made. Lang analysts are urged to diversify their views rather than specialize to the point where they become blind to the values of all but one method of analysis. AA
