Zusammenfassung: | Montague's system of categories is expounded; a difficulty concerning his basic category E is noted. He owes a great deal to Carnap, but the latter misunderstood Frege's crucial distinction between Sinn & Bedeutung. An examination of Montague's modification of Carnap's extension/intension distinction, & his application of modal logic to propositions containing intensional expressions shows a difficulty in his treatment of psychological Vs. The incoherent notion of the set of all possible worlds further mars his analysis: to guarantee the consistency of descriptions of the latter, they must be inhabited by necessary objects. Carnap/Montague semantics is not wrong but inside-out & does not yield a theory of meaning. Modified HA |
