Zusammenfassung: | Another path leading to man's self-understanding through the scientific method is examined. Linguistics is the science which corresponds to grammar, the latter being a technique or a mechanical art. Even if this commonly held view is incomplete, it is not false, for the linguist (after basing himself in theory & thus standing back somewhat from his subject) is obliged to sit in judgement on language as it exists in usage. Starting out from this need for "grammar"--i.e., a set of rules for using words properly & effectively--the study of language has emerged as the science of linguistic structures. Linguistics thus becomes conscious of itself. HA |
