Zusammenfassung:Reproduces this paper from November 1947 to mark the 150th anniversary of the American Psychiatric Association. Argues the importance of distinguishing between meaning and cause. There is a fallacy around that once some early memory has been recaptured and the `cause' of emotional ill health thereby removed, wholeness will follow. Also, psychiatrists must not lose sight of the present in their quest for the past.
